What is the Radioactivity Tested & Certified™ Program?

The Radioactivity Tested & Certified™ Program (RTCP) is a per lot testing program that analyzes products in order to detect the presence of the principal radionuclides associated with accidents involving nuclear reactors (I-131, Cs-134, Cs-137). The program is designed to address consumer demand for additional safety in products being used or consumed by the general public.

What do we test for?

The program analyzes 3 radioactive isotopes, Iodine-131, Caesium-134 & Caesium-137. The program tolerance of <50bq/kg total for the three isotopes compares to the European individual tolerances of 150Bq/Kg for Iodine-131, 400Bq/Kg for Caesium-134 and Caesium-137 and FDA tolerances of 170 bq/kg for I-131, and 1200 bq/kg for Cs-134 + Cs-137.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What does “radioactivity in food” mean?
Radioactivity in food refers to the presence of radioactive elements, such as Cesium-137 (Cs-137), that can contaminate products through the environment, shipping containers, or production sites. While rare, contamination can pose long-term health risks if not identified and managed.
  2. Why was shrimp recently recalled for radioactivity?
In August 2025, a major U.S. retailer recalled frozen shrimp after testing revealed possible contamination with Cesium-137. This raised consumer concerns, but it also highlighted the importance of independent testing and certification programs like RTCP.
  3. How does radioactive contamination happen in the food chain?
    Contamination can occur through:
    • Import/export shipments exposed to contaminated containers
    • Environmental exposure near nuclear incidents
    • Cross-contamination in manufacturing or processing facilities
  1. Is radioactive food dangerous?
Yes, even low levels of radioactive isotopes can be harmful if consumed regularly over time. That’s why proactive monitoring and third-party certification are critical to ensuring food safety.
  2. What is RTCP certification?
RTCP (Radioactivity Testing & Certification Program) is an independent, science-based program that:
    • Tests products for radioactive elements (including Cs-137)
    • Verifies safe levels in compliance with international standards
    • Provides a visible certification mark to assure consumers of safety
  1. Why should I look for RTCP-certified products?
When you see the RTCP mark, it means the product has been tested and verified below limits of detection of radioactivity. This protects you and your family while giving peace of mind at the point of purchase.
  2. How can I tell if a product is certified?
Look for the RTCP certification logo on packaging, or visit our searchable database to verify products directly.
  3. Are recalls less likely with certified products?
Yes. Companies that participate in RTCP undergo regular testing (lot-to-lot based), reducing the risk of recalls and ensuring safer supply chains.
  4. What can consumers do to stay safe?
    • Stay informed about recalls from regulatory agencies like the FDA or CFIA.
    • Choose products with independent certifications like RTCP.
    • Ask brands and retailers if their supply chain undergoes radioactivity testing.
